This scholarship is created in memory of Shay Barnes Starnes. Shay’s love for music started at an early age when she would sing to anyone who would listen. She loved to play the piano and pick the banjo, but she loved people most of all. Shay graduated from Western Carolina University and earned her master’s degree in music education from UNCG. She was the chorus teacher for seventeen years at Granit Falls Middle School. Her students loved her dearly and she loved them in return. This scholarship was established by Shay’s friends and family to help continue her legacy of giving through music.
